Small mammals are masters at masking discomfort, making it easy for health issues to go unnoticed at home. Regular exams with an exotic veterinarian help uncover problems early, before they become serious or life-threatening.
During a wellness visit, we look for quiet changes such as weight loss, dental overgrowth, decreased appetite, changes in droppings, coat or skin issues, abnormal posture, or reduced activity. For species like rabbits and guinea pigs, dental problems can develop quickly, while ferrets and hedgehogs may show only subtle behavioral shifts when they’re not feeling well.
Because early intervention matters so much with exotic pets, routine exams are one of the most important tools we have to protect their long-term health.
